May 30 – June 1, 2024

Vancouver Island Conference Centre
101 Gordon St, Nanaimo, BC V9R 5J8

A whole community of people will come together over these three days to share stories, celebrate, and learn. Many of the talks and panels feature topics related to learning, research, engagement, building community and connecting with people for inclusion and community.

Life Beyond Services: Navigating natural and formal supports in the community

Come learn about a study about natural support (support given freely out of love, loyalty, and necessity) and formal support (government or privately funded services). In this workshop, the presenters will share the results of a review on natural disability supports in Canada and findings from interviews and focus groups of people served, family members, and employees of the three BC-based organizations. After the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to offer suggestions about how to move this research for action and positive change.

Everybody Belongs has professional development opportunities for teachers and educational assistants. We recognize how important it is that educators receive training and support to encourage and promote inclusion in schools.

Beyond Boundaries: Dismantling Professional Silos to Cultivate Inclusive School Cultures

This workshop will explore strategies aimed at dismantling socially constructed barriers between siloed roles within school-based teams. This session will emphasize the significance of the shared responsibility for student success and focus on how the collective expertise of team members contributes to social and academic inclusion of students with disabilities in general education classrooms. Attendees will leave with a renewed commitment to inclusive education and practical strategies to foster multi-disciplinary collaboration in their own practice.

The Self Advocacy Leadership Institute Certificate is available to 100 people. In this learning stream, participants can choose from a selection of 21 different workshops, all that have a focus on self advocacy, disability leadership, activism, and personal development.

This certificate is a way to recognize your learning over the course of the conference. No matter what stage of learning you are at in your journey of self advocacy, the Self Advocacy Leadership Institute can guide you to be a more effective advocate for yourself and your communities.

How People with Disabilities are Leading their Movement in their Community

In this presentation, you will hear from five self-advocates through discussion and a hosted activity about how people with disabilities are and can be leaders and how being a leader can add to your life, as you get to include all the things you love in that role. Speakers will share how they’ve been able to transition from regular day services to using their service  hours in a more creative and flexible way. The fun activity is for everyone and will help self advocates, staff, and leadership in seeing how they can support leadership opportunities within their roles.

Limited scholarships are available to help remove the financial barriers for those who have not yet been able to attend a conference. Scholarship applications have closed on March 29 at 5:00 pm.
