Building an Inclusive BC: The History of Disability Rights

Welcome!

Building an Inclusive BC: The History of Disability Rights is a free, self-paced online course developed in partnership with the BC CEO Network. It offers a powerful introduction to the history of disability rights in British Columbia through eight engaging modules designed to spark reflection, deepen understanding, and inspire action.

You’ll explore the rise and fall of institutions, the emergence of Family and Self Advocacy Movements, and the experience and realities of Indigenous Peoples. The course also covers the evolution of service delivery in BC and highlights key legal decisions that have shaped our province and country. Each module includes reflective activities with a knowledge check to help you connect the lessons to real-world change.

This course is for anyone who wants to better support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities—whether you’re a service provider, community member, advocate, or policymaker. As many of us know, this history wasn’t taught in school. Now’s the time to learn it.

We can support 200 learners per month over the next four years. The course takes approximately 1–2 hours per week to complete and must be finished within one month. A certificate is issued upon completion.
