NEW WESTMINSTER, BC–This Saturday December 3, Inclusion BC Foundation and BC Self-Advocacy Foundation host our second annual Film Festival, celebrating the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Unique in British Columbia, this event features a series of short films and is produced, programmed and hosted by people with intellectual disabilities.

“This year’s collection of short films, featuring productions from around the world, provides a unique platform to spark dialogue about the rights and opportunities of people with intellectual disabilities,” notes Inclusion BC Foundation Executive Director Amy Nugent. “It also celebrates the ongoing movement towards full inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, who are still struggling to be recognized as an essential part of Canada’s societal mosaic.”

Our headline Film Festival event in New Westminster is being coordinated with simultaneous screenings by partner organizations in four other communities across British Columbia — Kelowna, Victoria, Prince George and Powell River.

Demonstrations of Love, a short documentary produced by Inclusion BC Foundation, will also premiere at the headline Film Festival event in New West. This documentary explores questions about the past, present and future of the inclusion movement, as seen through the eyes of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.

Our Film Festival and documentary premiere are part of Heritage Canada’s official countdown to the Canada 150 celebrations in 2017. The Demonstrations of Love premiere will also serve as the official launch of our Canada 150 project, a year-long participatory initiative celebrating Disability Pride.
