Opening Keynote- Leadership: taking your vision to action in the nonprofit arena Dr. Samantha Nutt

Samantha Nutt is an award-winning humanitarian, bestselling author and acclaimed public speaker. A medical doctor and a founder of the renowned international humanitarian organization War Child, Dr. Nutt has worked with children and their families at the frontline of many of the world’s major crises. In this presentation, Dr. Samantha Nutt looks at the meaning and significance of leadership. She maps out ways in which we can all be more effective leaders – in the world and in the workplace – because the capacity to lead exists in each and every one of us.

AI – Figuring out the BC Autism Service and Supports System 

In this workshop you will learn about a new provincial program called Autism Information Services BC (AISBC). This new program is part of the Ministry of Children and Family Development and provides information, resources and services for families, service providers and professionals across the province.

A2 – Hire A Youth Today-Make A Difference For Tomorrow 

Youthworks and LEAP are two different yet equally successful youth employment services. Knowing that youth with divers-abilities want the same things as all youth, Delta Community Living Society and the Langley Association for Community Living created summer paid employment services. In this workshop, you will hear of the challenges with funding, parental concerns, work ethic and building skills in life, learning and employment. During the workshop, videos and materials will be shared and there will be time for questions or shared experiences.

A3 – Kelowna’s Community for All Action Plan 

Community for All was developed by the City of Kelowna as part of their Healthy City Strategy. The action plan focuses on creating a city that is healthy, safe, active and inclusive for seniors, children and those with diverse-abilities. This workshop will share the outcomes of Kelowna’s Community for All Action Plan including the actions and partnerships developed. Kelowna’s Healthy Housing Strategy will be discussed and how the City of Kelowna is working with Interior Health and community partners to achieve housing options that are diverse, affordable and attainable.

A4 – Inclusion in Sport 

This workshop will share information about how the Nanaimo Canoe Kayak Club became inclusive of children of all abilities. The process was part of a research project by Vancouver Island University student Anne Nikitovic. You will learn how you can use the same methods in your own communities to make sports groups more inclusive.

A5 – Mentoring Educators with photovoice SESSION FULL!

Photovoice is a research method used to document lived experiences through photo imagery and discussions. In this hands-on workshop, you will explore the use of photovoice and its power to express a person’s voice. The workshop will also show how student teachers in a Bachelor of Education program used photovoice to become effective and inclusive classroom teachers.

A7 – Advancing New Support Options – From Design to Implementation

In this workshop you will learn about the CLBC project Advancing New Support Options (ANSO). The new service will support individuals to achieve goals and experience positive life changes in the areas of employment, learning, community inclusion, and relationships. The first phase and the second phase are now complete and the project is entering the final phase, which involves preparing for the launch of the new service. Over the next year, a small-scale launch of the service will be rolled out 5 communities across the province. The goal is to make this service broadly available in 2019.

A8 – Safeguards Provided by the Public Guardian and Trustee 

Sometimes the services of the Public Guardian and Trustee are needed as a back-up safeguard when other least intrusive supports have not been enough to meet an adult’s needs. This session will provide an overview of the safeguards PGT provides such as investigating financial abuse, neglect, or mismanagement and making health care and financial/ legal decisions.

The Bodies of Film Club Present “The Other Sister (1999)”

Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Bodies of Film Club examines how people with intellectual disabilities are represented in film. The film club, which includes people with intellectual disabilities, will show the movie “The Other Sister” and host a critical discussion afterwards.

About The Other Sister (1999): Carla Tate (Juliette Lewis) has never been like her sisters. Sent at a young age to a school for children with intellectual disabilities, a maturing Carla returns to her family home in San Francisco. Her overbearing mother, Elizabeth (Diane Keaton), and patient father, Radley (Tom Skerritt), struggle to come to terms with Carla’s growing independence as she embarks on her dream of attending college and pursues a romance with Danny (Giovanni Ribisi), a young man with a similar disability.

B2 – This is My Life (BC People First) SESSION FULL!

This workshop will focus on Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – The Right to Live in the Community. What does this mean as a human right? What does this mean to self-advocates? There will be stories and ideas shared about how people who are labeled with a disability are living in community. We will also talk about how people who are isolated can be supported to live in the community. This is a workshop that is being presented across Canada to self-advocates, families and agencies.

B7 – Ready, Willing & Able – a 3-year review SESSION FULL!

Ready, Willing & Able is an “employer-based” demand model, connecting employers to qualified candidates with intellectual disabilities. Rooted in Article 27 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, RWA uses the expertise of existing employment support agencies while continuing to expand the conversation on what inclusive employment means.  This presentation will highlight the key findings of the Ready, Willing and Able national evaluation with a particular focus on the BC results.

D2 – Inclusive Job Seekers: What every service provider should know 

Self-advocates will share their work experiences and provide insight on how job seekers with Autism Spectrum Disorder and intellectual disabilities can be supported to work. This will include: Working with Employers to support inclusive hiring, supporting inclusive job seekers as they transition into work, and ongoing supports. This workshop was initially presented to the Canadian Vocational Training Centre in 2015 and has been updated to reflect new learnings and experiences.

Why is the voice of self advocates important? In this workshop we will talk about why self advocate groups are not being formed, why they’re not staying active and not connecting with other groups. This workshop will present information about the number of people who are aging with an intellectual disability in BC. D6 – From a Student’s Perspective 

The Richmond School District Visioning Task Force invited students to share their stories, thoughts, images and artifacts to inspire and guide the creation of new Vision, Mission and Values statements for the school district. Part of this work was the creation of the YouTube video “Visioning Today for Tomorrow’s World” which will be viewed during the workshop. In keeping with the important work of the School District, the RSCL Inclusive Education Committee will be bringing together educators, students and parents to develop a Richmond Student’s Charter. We will be asking the audience to join us in a conversation exploring the process and impact of a community working together to strengthen the success of Inclusive Education.

William’s Lake Wildfire Evacuation – Witness how three agencies came together to save lives and strengthen the unconditional bonds of love and inclusion during the worst wildfire season in BC’s history. Experience firsthand the stories, see the news coverage, live videos and astounding photographs, and listen to personal accounts of people from the Williams’ Lake Association for Community, Axis Family Resources and AiMHi (the Prince George Association for Community Living)  as they mobilized every resource they had to evacuate Williams Lake. This disaster brought out the best and most compelling truths that are at the core of why we are part of one of the most important social movements in Canada.

E7 – Using Treasured Objects to Advance Imagery in Creative Writing 

In this workshop we will explore, share, and write about our “treasures.” Treasures are objects that mean something to you, or to someone you know. Writing can include: a story, a poem or a riddle, a diary entry, a letter, a sketch or a scene (like a short play or storyboard), an article (newspaper or magazine), a personal piece of writing. You can bring an object if you like, or draw it or tell us about it! Note: We will be using some essential oils (all organic) in this workshop, so if scents are a problem for you, let us know ahead of time as they will be confined and won’t be circulated throughout the air.

This panel session will include faculty, staff and inclusion facilitators who are making UBC-Okanagan an inclusive post-secondary community. Panelists will talk about post secondary education, the power of inclusion and the capacity of communities to be inclusive. We will talk about the the 6 inclusive post-secondary education initiatives across the province. We hope that participants will get a clearer picture of inclusive post-secondary education and the potential that it has to inspire opportunities for young people with diversabilities to benefit from and contribute to community.

F3 – Four steps on the path to the RDSP 

Many people living with a disability don’t have a pension plan. The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) offers not only an opportunity to save for your future costs but also a chance to take advantage of free money offered by the Federal Government as incentives to save and invest in an RDSP. If you’re under 50, you may be able to get up to $90,000 in your lifetime in matching grants and bonds. Justine will lead you through the process of qualifying for the Disability Tax Credit which is the gateway to the RDSP. Tom will explain how to manage the RDSP to ensure the maximum pension benefits. They’ll also talk the free supports offered to individuals and professionals by the Access RDSP program.

The inclusion movement has carried us a long way in terms of civil rights, but statistically families are still providing 80% of the support needed for their children to live inclusive lives in the community. Family members are not immortal and their contribution is unsustainable. Let’s have a frank discussion about:

  • Transitioning from peer to caregiver
  • Ageing parents
  • Protecting community inclusion
  • Family conflict

Mobilizing people to act collectively on issues is a challenge in today’s busy and distracted world. What can we learn from the experience and some of the tried and true methods of trade unions and other social movements?
